COVID-19 update - Thursday 10 February 2022

Dear Families of CBC Fremantle

I hope you are safe and well.

As best we can, given the latest advice, I am able to provide some more clarity around arrangements for this term. Our planning is designed with safety of our community and the continuity of our learning programmes foremost in our minds. We are consulting closely with Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA) to ensure that we are adhering to all Public Health Orders and guidelines whilst making this year as normal as possible for students. This last statement is very important. Wherever we can, we will try and give the boys as full an experience of school life as possible.

We are unable to have the mixed year level Masses and Liturgies, which are so significant at CBC Fremantle. An alternative programme has been arranged for Thursday mornings so that our students can continue to experience this part of College life. Parents and guests are not currently able to attend Liturgies.

Term 1 Liturgies

  • Mass Thursday 24 February – Special Ministers' Commissioning Mass
  • Ash Wednesday Liturgy Wednesday 2 March – Livestreamed in Mentor Classes
  • Mass Thursday 10 March – Year 7 Kelly and Year 7 Morgan
  • Mass Thursday 17 March – Year 7 O'Connor and Year 7 Patrick
  • Mass Thursday 24 March – Year 7 Rice and Year 7 Samson
  • Mass Thursday 31 March – Year 8 Kelly and Year 8 Morgan
  • Easter Liturgy Wednesday 6 April – Livestreamed in Mentor Classes
  • Edmund Rice Mass Friday 8 April – Livestreamed in Mentor Classes

To minimise the number of students using changerooms, students are permitted to wear their Physical Education uniforms to school (wearing their white phys ed top) on days they have Physical Education, Outdoor Education or Sports Science classes. This is in addition to year level House uniform days. To paraphrase Lt Col. Bill Kilgore in Apocalypse Now, I hope you all enjoy the smell of polyester in the morning.

Music rehearsals will proceed with additional precautions in place wherever possible such as separation of year levels, outdoor rehearsals, mask wearing and hand sanitising. Music students will receive updated details from Mr Mancuso and Mrs Tandy.

Where possible, co-curricular activities will proceed with additional precautions such as year level separation and alternating days, and moving outside where possible. Staff coordinating these activities will provide more information.

Please see the notice below from Troy Mollica, our Head of Sport regarding changes to our sports programme:

Sports Covid-19 Update Term 1

Dear CBC Students and Families

We started 2022 positively with many trials and training sessions taking place across a number of sports. Unfortunately, we now find ourselves in a position where new restrictions will limit some of the inter-school & intra-school opportunities for a yet to be determined period of time.

Interschool Sport

As a result of these new restrictions the SASJ competition has been postponed until Term 4. In addition to this all interschool sports that are required to be played onsite at schools are not permitted under current restrictions. This unfortunately means that most of the competitions we would be playing in will not be able to go ahead in the near future.

Whilst we are disappointed that many activities aren't able to go ahead, we are able to safely provide the following opportunities with additional precautions in place:

  • PSA Cricket vs CCGS (Friday 11 February)
  • PSA Cricket vs Aquinas (Friday 18 February)
  • PSA Cricket vs Scotch (Friday 18 March)
  • Senior Tennis (Monday 14 March)
  • Junior Tennis (Thursday 17 March)

Students and families will be notified as further interschool events become available.

House Swimming

Indoor events are not permitted so we will unfortunately have to significantly modify our House Swimming Carnival this year. We are currently working through possible solutions within the new guidelines and more details will be available once finalised. Please note that the Quad Meet & ACC Carnivals are also most likely to be either cancelled or significantly modified.

House Cross Country

The House Cross Country is currently still going ahead on Tuesday 1 March at Fremantle Park, with some minor adjustments required to the programme for the day. More detailed information will be sent out very soon about this carnival.

Sports Training

Sports training will go ahead where possible under the current restrictions, with additional safety measures in place such as year level grouping, alternating sessions, social distancing:

  • Senior & junior tennis training (senior Tuesday & junior Thursday)
  • Swimming training (junior Tuesday & senior Thurs mornings)
  • Year 7 intra-school cricket (from Wednesday Week 4)

Finally, I'm sure there is disappointment amongst the students regarding these changes to our sports programme. Rest assured that we will seek to provide as much opportunity as we are able under the current guidelines. As you can appreciate this may take a little time and we ask for your support and patience while we work on viable alternatives for our boys.

Kind Regards

Troy Mollica (Head of Sport)

I'm not sure whether the life expectancy of this latest reading of COVID-19 conditions will exceed the life of a female mayfly, but it is what we are dealing with today. My deepest apologies for the constant stream of emails and communication and hope that by being updated, it alleviates any anxiety that you or your son may be feeling.

Warmest regards

Mr Domenic Burgio
