Earlier this term two teams from CBC participated in the Da Vinci Decathlon, a day event designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of high school students. Students competed to problem solve in teams of eight across 10 disciplines: engineering, mathematics and chess, code breaking, art and poetry, science, English, ideation, creative producers, cartography and legacy. This year 1264 students competed from Years 7 to 10 from 45 schools across Western Australia.
Our Year 7 team (who were pulled together at the 11th hour to replace a group of Year 8's who withdrew) placed 27th overall in their competition, achieving a total of 570 points. They ranked within the top 20 in seven of the ten events and scored their highest rankings of 13 for both Mathematics and Code Breaking.
Our Year 9 team (who had quite a few more preparation sessions than the Year 7's) placed 15th overall in their competition, achieving an impressive total of 900 points. They ranked within the top 20 for all 10 events – an amazing achievement – and scored their highest rankings of five for Mathematics and seven for Cartography.
Jack Dudley, one of the Year 9 competitors, gave this review of the day: "Davinci Decathlon was a great day out. From beginning to end we were challenged to work as a team, stretch our thinking and complete problem-solving tasks covering a range of subjects. Thanks very much to UWA for providing such a magnificent venue in Winthrop Hall and allowing us to experience their incredibly beautiful campus. Thanks, also, to MLC for hosting the event. They ran the event very smoothly and provided the opportunity for so many schools to come together for a fun-filled day of socialising and learning."
