After a well-deserved summer break, CBC Fremantle commenced the 2023 academic year with some exciting initiatives thrown in with the comforting traditions.
The Year 12 young men had spent last Friday at a special Retreat preparing them for the year ahead and the welcome they showed the Year 7 boys helped put a lot of the younger boys at ease on their first Monday at their new school.
The Class of 2028 was greeted with the College's traditional Year 12 guard of honour, watched on by misty-eyed parents as their sons commenced their CBC journey. The older boys were also emotional, reflecting on the passing of the years as they remembered their own welcome ceremony six years ago and the incredible friendships and memories they have made since.
The first day was a relaxed introduction for the Year 7 boys, who spent time with their Year 12 buddies getting to know the ropes and meeting their Mentor teachers. The senior boys also spent time with Old Boy John Hughes ('52) and parent Shaun McManus as part of their development as the College leaders, being inspired with stories of courage, determination and hard work to achieve your goals.
The remainder of the student community commenced on Tuesday, with some boys making history and catching one of the brand-new CBC bus routes to school. The four buses had trialled the run over the break, but teething and traffic problems didn't phase the intrepid commuters who arrived a little late yet still in time for the commissioning of the student leaders at a special community assembly.
It was warm in the gym for the event but the happy boys were impeccably behaved as the Year 12 student leaders were introduced by Mr Adryan Winnan and received their badges of office from their parents. The ceremony highlighted the partnership between the College and its families in the development of tomorrow's gentlemen, and provides wonderful memories for the parents, carers and guardians of the young men.

College Principal, Mr Domenic Burgio, addressed the assembly, urging the boys to become the best versions of themselves and to be a CBC boy, and not just a boy who goes to CBC. Staff who have just commenced at the College were introduced and perhaps the biggest round of applause was saved for the new College Chef who, along with the Canteen team, will be rolling out a new home-cooked menu over the next few weeks.
The boys headed off to class, excited to be together again and getting back into the routine of their classes, greeting old teachers and meeting new, working out classroom and locker changes, and rising to the challenge of another year on their CBC journey.
